Vitamin C is a water soluble nutrient vital to tissue repair and immune support. The tissue repair includes muscles, tendons, ligaments as well as the derma (skin). Vitamin C is essential for health in general, it is particularly important to athletes and the actively exercising for support and repair from training that causes connective tissue damage. Weight training and high impact sports in particular, create connective tissue damage. Vitamin C is also important to athletes for its role as an antioxidant, helping to reverse some of the oxidative damage that may occur from exercise. This oxidative damage, caused by free radicals, may contribute to chronic inflammation and possibly injury. Vitamin C supports a healthy immune system and may help to prevent the dip in immune function that can occur post exercise and training.
